Take up your cross and follow Jesus every day

Mike Sherrill is Executive Director of Mennonite Mission Network.

In Mark 8:34-35, Jesus says to "take up your cross and do as I do." Mike Sherrill reminds us that the first step of discipleship is to give ourselves up to Jesus. We participate in the suffering of Christ as we pick up our cross and follow, surrendering to trust in God – even if we should be sent across the sea in a tiny leather boat with no paddle, much like the ancient Gaelic monks.

During Lent, Mike asks us to keep in mind that "denying self" isn’t about self-denial. It’s about surrender to God’s will. We have been sent by God. Let’s follow that calling.

The song I would like to share with you is Take Up Your Cross. This time brought to you by the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir.

Lyrics

Take up your cross and follow Jesus
Take up your cross every day
Don’t be ashamed to say that you know Him
Count the cost, take up your cross and follow Him
What are you doing for the King
Have you really given everything
For the One who gave
His all for you
Don’t be satisfied just to know
That the Lord has saved your soul
Have you forgotten what you need to do

(chorus)

Don’t be ashamed to say that you know Him
Count the cost, take up your cross and follow Him
I know sometimes the road is long
And I know sometimes you feel like you can’t go on
But you can make it, you just

(chorus)

Don’t be ashamed to say that you know Him
Count the cost, take up your cross
Follow Him
