Join a community. San Francisco’s MVS unit is located in the vibrant and funky Lower Haight neighborhood, a mix of homes, shops and restaurants. Like in many large cities, it’s easy to get swept up in the bustle of city life. First Mennonite Church of San Francisco invites MVSers into their community as they live a life of service, community and simplicity. The MVS unit is housed in a spacious top flat of a Victorian-style house. MVSers each have their own bedroom and share a common living area, kitchen and two bathrooms. The house also shares an organic garden and small patio with the neighbors downstairs. MVSers have easy access to public transportation, and are within walking distance of the church, parks, groceries, and many congregation members’ homes.
Join a congregation. Meeting in a Jewish synagogue, First Mennonite Churchof San Francisco (FMCSF) has a strong sense of community and is committed to creating a safe space for doubts, questions, and exploration of new ideas. Over the past several years, the congregation has grown to more than 100 people and is constantly exploring new ways to engage socially and grow spiritually. FMCSF church members take special care and initiative to welcome MVSers into community life and congregational involvement, both important parts of the San Francisco MVS experience. Whether through music, Sunday school teaching, small groups, committees, activism or social events, there are plenty of opportunities to dive in and explore your gifts!
Join a cause. San Francisco MVSers are placed in agencies whose work FMCSF strongly supports. Some congregation members (including former MVSers) even work in the agencies alongside MVSers! Participants engage with issues of poverty, homelessness, social justice, education and health in a vibrant urban setting. There are also opportunities to support mothers and children, work with people on the street, and advocate for nonviolent change in society. Placements typically include a combination of direct service and administrative support.
