Warm weather is not the only reason SOOP volunteers are attracted to Arizona.

The Phoenix unit has many opportunities for community outreach:

  • Assist at a refugee settlement center
  • Do building repair and remodeling projects
  • Teach ELL (English Language Learners)
  • Work in food banks

Our volunteers enjoy an warm atmosphere of living and working together, sharing evening meals with other SOOP volunteers, and visiting local sights.

Coordinators assist with transportation to and from the airport, when needed, and plan work site locations in line with the interests and abilities of volunteers. It is critical that you stay in contact with the Phoenix coordinators about your plans and about any changes you may need to make.

Housing is provided in a communal setting at the Phoenix Menno Guest House, a 6-bedroom, 3-bathroom home near Trinity Mennonite Church. The charge for food and lodging is $50/day for singles, and $65/day for couples. Food is available for breakfast and lunch but up to the individual for preparation. The evening meal is shared by all with volunteers taking their turn at preparation.
