MCC Appalachia

MCC Appalachia Build (formerly SWAP) is a Christian relief and development program that works directly in communities of Appalachia in Eastern Kentucky and West Virginia. Appalachia is a beautiful place to visit and there are many opportunities for service. MCC Appalachia Build (formerly SWAP) is a home repair program. They are looking for carpenters, cooks, site coordinators, and persons to lead evening sessions. Volunteers may also serve at a local food pantry and clothing bank, sorting clothes and distributing food. MCC owns and uses a number of properties in Eastern Kentucky in need of upkeep. Assistance with the maintenance allows MCC workers to focus more time on program work in Appalachia. This maintenance includes cutting lawns, minor building repairs, and painting. If there are other skills that volunteers bring – MCC Appalachia will look within the community to match interests with the needs here (i.e., education, reading, crafting, etc.). MCC Appalachia Build sites are currently located in Kimball, West Virginia, and in Elkhorn City, Kentucky.

Lodging

At the Elkhorn City, KY location, there is housing provided at the Elkhorn Community Church that contains private rooms with queen size beds.  In Kimball, WV, there are staff quarters at the Houston United Methodist Church. During the summer season (June-August), volunteers can eat with the groups. Off season they can use the kitchens to make meals.
