Open Door Mennonite Church and the Peace and Justice Center of the Deep South are dedicated to helping people learn from the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and fostering social justice. The Peace and Justice Center of the Deep South is being created by Open Door to create systemic justice in four pervasive areas: health and wellness, food security, racial equity, and educational success.
Service opportunities at Open Door and the Peace and Justice Center include building renovation and repair, computer lab support, as well as support for community events such as city gardening, spaghetti dinners, and health screening. You will be in the heart of the history of the Civil Rights movement with a church focused on addressing the current realities of injustice from a peace perspective.
Lodging: Housing is available at the church building, with a lockable bedroom with a queen bed. The church kitchen and two church bathrooms with hot showers will also be made available. A donation is requested for housing. You will provide your own food but may be hosted by church families or may join community meals frequently.
