What kind of message was Jesus trying to give us in Luke 8:1-3?
After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.
The King of Kings and Lord of Lords came to earth and could have easily
snapped His fingers to produce untold riches, but instead chose to
depend totally on God and others to cover His ministry expenses. I don’t
think He was telling us not to work and ask for
mone; instead, I believe the lesson is to teach us to give.
The Bible teaches us that giving is a gift (see Romans 12:6-8 below). We have
different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your
gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it
is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then
teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving,
then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to
show mercy, do it cheerfully.
