Finding purpose through service

Service opens a path to purpose

By Jane Morrow

“… Not looking to your own interests but each of you [looking] to the interests of the others.” — Philippians 2:4 (NIV)

Service — whether through volunteering, community initiatives or spontaneous acts of kindness — serves as a transformative force in society and individual lives.

It has been a powerful alternative to military draft, providing an avenue for young people to serve their country or community without compromising their Christian beliefs and ethical considerations.

Service offers unique opportunities for self-discovery, guiding individuals in finding their true passion and purpose. For those with Christian beliefs, service is a meaningful way to live out Jesus’s teachings, reflecting his compassion, humility and love for others.

By participating in service programs, we learn to appreciate diversity, develop empathy, and understand the importance and benefits of collaboration.

Many individuals, especially young adults, find themselves uncertain about their career paths or life goals as they reach the end of high school or college. By stepping outside the boundaries of conventional schooling and professional tracks, service offers a time to discover one’s gifts and interests in real-world settings. This exposure can be pivotal in finding and pursuing a genuine passion.

In addition, service experiences can refine important life skills like communication, teamwork, and leadership. A person working with other volunteers, for instance, learns project management and people skills that are valued in almost every field. This type of learning, rooted in practical, often challenging situations, is enduring.

In a world where individualism often dominates, service can help people feel connected to something larger than themselves. Contributing to the common good helps break down barriers between people of different backgrounds, giving individuals the experience of solidarity, in pursuit of shared goals.

Unlike in many jobs, where individuals feel disconnected from a larger purpose, service shows the tangible impact of one’s efforts. This feedback loop brings meaning and satisfaction, encouraging lifelong involvement in the community.

Service shapes stronger congregations and communities into a more compassionate, cohesive whole. In a world facing immense challenges, environmental and social, the act of service serves as a beacon for hope, resilience, and genuine human connection.
