Lesson 5: Teacher’s Notes

Lesson
5: Hospitality is a two-way street

Objective:
To
explore the meaning of hospitality as an approach to engaging with military
veterans and their families.

Opening
exercise:
Before class, teacher sets up a serving table, tablecloth,
nice dishes — no boxes from the bakery or cartons of creamer. Set out small
snacks — finger food both sweet and savory, a variety of drinks for everyone.
As each person enters, the teacher and an assistant or two serve the
participants, asking preferences and pointing out choices.

After everyone is present and served, ask about the
different tone this created for the class. Did everyone feel welcomed and
included? Did the presence of food and hospitable service create a welcoming
and relaxed atmosphere? Would it be difficult to harm someone or despise
someone who has offered you hospitality? Why/why not?

Note that the opening exercise for Lesson 6 requires an announcement at the end of Lesson 5. Invite everyone to bring a symbol of peace to class.
