Service Adventure leader application

Service Adventure unit leaders play a pivotal role in making Service Adventure a formative experience for participants. By living alongside the participants in a shared household setting, Service Adventure unit leaders have the unique opportunity to walk with young adults not as a parent or a teacher, but as a mentor, navigating faith and everyday life together.

"Service Adventure leadership is an incredible opportunity to gain another home away from home, and to really pour yourself into something, and also be poured into, as well."

Michael Oyer, leader for the 2019-2022 Anchorage Service Adventure unit.

There is no ‘typical’ Service Adventure leader. Across the program’s 30+ year history, Service Adventure has welcomed leaders ages 24 through retirement. Individuals and married couples. Introverts and extroverts. The one common element leaders share is a desire to guide young adults through household community, together with a local supporting church.

"My favorite part of being a Service Adventure unit leader was the one-on-ones with the participants where we processed balancing spiritual life, home life, community life and work life. I know I learned as much or more from those young adults as they may have learned from me. 10 out of 10…highly recommend!"

Cindy Weaver, leader for the 2017-2021 Colorado Springs Service Adventure unit.

Unit leader responsibilities include:

  • Providing structure and direction in all aspects of unit life.
  • Guiding and supporting participants on their spiritual and personal journeys.

Leaders
live in or near a household of three to five Service Adventure
participants. Service Adventure participant terms are 10 months. Unit
leader terms are two years in length and may be extended.

“As a
couple…we were looking at different ways that we could serve, and help
shape future generations to come. We found Service Adventure to be a
wonderful way to do that.”

Travis Clarke, co-leader for the 2022-2024 Colorado Springs Service Adventure unit.

Unit
leadership responsibilities represent the equivalent of a half-time
job, enabling leaders to engage in part-time service or work in the
community.
