Lesson 1: Additional Resources

Jesus
and the Centurion
by
Leo Hartshorn: This is a good background piece for the entire Sunday-school
series, as it takes one of the primary texts often used to justify
participation in the military and discusses it from a peace theology
perspective.

Veterans
and Pacifists in a Theology Classroom:

This dialogue between peace theology professor Peter Dula and Iraq War
veteran/student Evan Knappenberger provides an interesting insight into
pacifist/veteran dynamics. This could be read aloud by two participants.

These
two stories, coupled with the opening story by Ron Adams could also be sent to
selected class participants in advance, inviting them to read beforehand and
summarize the stories for the class. Reflecting on these three stories could
easily take up one class period, with the second class period focusing on the Scripture,
commentary, and discussion questions.

Alternatively,
the stories could be used as handouts for further reflection after the lesson.
