There are several potential options available to a Health Associate in and around Alamosa, including hospital, public health, and clinic-based opportunities. These are designed year-by-year depending on changing needs of local healthcare organizations and the interests and training held by the volunteer. While some opportunities may require specific nursing, medical assistant or emergency medical certifications, others may be suited for volunteers such as pre-med students who do not yet hold specific healthcare certifications or licenses.
Public Health: opportunities such as assisting with the San Luis Valley Regional Epidemiologist; school-based screening, referral and education (Coordinated Health Assessment and Management Program); periodic childhood medical specialty clinics; home health and personal care services; surveying and assessment of public health data, Quality Assurance, etc.
Clinic-based: opportunities such as working within a Community Health Center serving lower-resource families or within a medical specialty setting such as a pediatric practice
Hospital-based: opportunities such as working with emergency medical services
Qualifications:
- Education in nursing, pre-med, social work or emergency medical services, and/or hands-on experience in healthcare delivery and settings
- Spanish language skills and/or experience with Latinx cultures a plus
- Flexibility to work with a range of projects and staff, as required
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- Strong computer skills, including databases and electronic records, a plus
- Able to relate easily to diverse populations and ages
