PLACEMENT

The Boys & Girls Clubs of the San Luis Valley (BGCSLV) provides affordable, high quality activities in a safe setting for young people, particularly for those most at-risk. The Club’s roots trace back to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day in 1988, when a group of high school students petitioned Alamosa City Council for an after-school gathering place for youth and teens. The community organized the first Club in Alamosa in 1992, and in 1996 it expanded to include sites throughout the San Luis Valley. Many of the children come from resident or immigrant Latino families, so cross-cultural understanding is key. BGCSLV provides programming in Healthy Eating, Active Lifestyles,  STEM, Technology, and Cultural Arts, and incorporates an Outdoor Recreation Program and 12-month Growing Dome. During the summer, a day camp with a variety of activities and outings is provided.

ASSIGNMENT

BGCSLV provides in-school, after-school and summer learning supports, along with social-emotional skills, recreational activities, and community service opportunities. Work with BGCSLV team to design and deliver programming for high-risk children in school, after-school and summer settings, including:

  • Gardening, Growing of Things and STEM programs
  • Recreation and field trips
  • Socio-emotional Learning
  • Culture & arts (e.g., music, drama, writing, etc.)
  • Other tasks & projects as assigned, to promote the mission of BGCSLV

QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.A. (teaching, social work, etc.) or equivalent experience in children’s programming
  • Good communication and organizational skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse ages, cultures & special needs of children (ages 6-18)
  • Ability to multi-task and handle stresses associated with needs and trauma of high-risk children
  • Spanish language skills and/or experience living in a Latino setting in the U.S. or abroad – or other relevant cross-cultural experiences -  a plus

This is an active and at times intense work environment. Due to the challenges BGCSLV members face, there is an emphasis on teamwork to support one another and the needs of each child. While a one-year term of service is available, a two-year commitment is preferred.
