This chapter delves deeper into the struggle for freedom. Although enslaved, people continued to challenge the chattel slavery system that degraded and dehumanized them. They sought and held tight to hope to persevere for something different. This chapter delves deeper into the struggle for freedom, exploring the ways – both figurative and literal – people took in search of their emancipation. We particularly explore the role of faith and faith communities that helped enslaved people escape their bonds.
