Three churches experience Christ at the Borders in 2024

Over the past summer, members of three churches took part in Chapter 1 of Mission Network’s Christ at the Border Just Peace Pilgrimage, at the United States-Mexico border:

Members from each of the churches shared their experiences on the pilgrimage in this video. Over seven days, each group traveled to several locations along the border where they learned about the complexities of immigration and border policies. They heard first-hand about the challenges faced by migrants and the harsh conditions they endure. They volunteered at migrant aid organizations where they learned about the humanitarian efforts in place to support migrants by providing food, water shelter and legal assistance.

“None of us became experts on immigration, but we did gain a lot of insights. We were encouraged to share what we heard and experienced with others to help change the narrative about people trying to immigrate to the U.S. in Southern Texas.”

– Denise Jensen, Maplewood Mennonite Church

Engaging with activists, legal experts, and local residents, the travelers learned about the human rights issues involved and the ongoing debates surrounding immigration reform.

“We came face-to-face with some harsh realities in South Texas. Every day we met people who are working hard to quench thirst, clothe, and provide shelter and dignity to people who desperately need it.”

 – Kris Shenk, Belmont Mennonite Church
