Every organization has a purpose; an answer to the deceptively simple question, "Why?" At Mennonite Mission Network, that "why?" is to lead, mobilize and equip the church to participate in holistic witness to Jesus Christ — across the street, all through the marketplaces and around the world.
In this Q&A series, Mission Network asks staff members to consider their role in the agency, and how they see their daily work joining into what God is doing around the world.
Michael Oyer reflects on his role as Human Resources Placement Coordinator.
What brought you to your role with Mission Network?
Serving with Mission Network’s Service Adventure (SA) program in Anchorage, Alaska, I had firsthand experience of the transformative nature of the program. Seeing the growth that occurs through serving and living in community together showed me how God is at work in my life.
As I was nearing the end of my three-year term, I was intrigued when I heard about an opportunity to continue working with Mission Network in a human resources role with people interested in service opportunities. After living in Alaska, I knew I wanted to travel and live in various areas in the United States, and this remote position offered that flexibility.
What is your favorite part of your role with Mission Network?
It is hard to name just one! I enjoy hearing stories from all sorts of people. In my six years of work experience since college, my jobs have mostly been working with a young demographic. At Mission Network, I work with many generations and am inspired by their reasons for seeking out service.
I’ve been able to work remotely while living in Ohio, Kansas, Utah and Vermont, so far.
I appreciate that my supervisor checks in with me, given that I work remotely. Our rapport makes me feel cared about as a human and not just an employee.
How has your perspective on your role with Mission Network changed over your time with the agency?
After my Service Adventure unit leader experience, working in human resources gave me a new perspective on Mission Network. While I appreciate the contact I had with Mission Network staff in my previous role, it was limited to a few people. Now I see the whole organization and the many things that are being accomplished. My perspective has shifted, and I see how Mission Network can and is impacting the world on a greater scale. I interview and speak to people who serve around the world, and now recognize how much work goes into all that by the Mission Network staff.
How do you view your role with Mission Network fitting into God’s mission for the church?
I view my role as a safeguard to God’s mission in the church by serving as one step in the process of discerning whether a person fits into how Mission Network views God wanting us to be the church. I also view my role as a very privileged place to be in, as I can speak with almost everyone that serves within the organization. This gives me a lens into who is interested in serving, for what reasons, and where they come from (their background).
What is something that has surprised you about your role with Mission Network?
All the things that Mission Network actually does; and all the roles, personalities and skill sets necessary to our efforts to fulfill God’s mission in the church.
