John Driver supported a dynamic movement of Latin America women theologians.
I met "Juan" Driver about 35 years ago in Guatemala at the Seminario Anabautista Latinoamericano (SEMILLA — Latin American Anabaptist Seminary). The Gospel Message of Peace — the title of one of his books — which he always lived out, left indelible marks on my life. John’s teaching reaffirmed my Christian work and showed me that, in the face of a violent world, the counter-cultural gospel — referencing another book title — that Jesus presents us with is the solution.
In his book, Woman and Man, Image of God, he gave additional impetus to Movimiento de Mujeres Anabautistas hacienda Teología desde América Latina (MTAL — Movement of Anabaptist Women Doing Theology from Latin America) to confirm that, as women, we have an essential and important role to fulfill wherever we find ourselves. His theological reflections on women opened our eyes and gave us the strength to continue supporting more people who suffer the consequences of a divided society that discriminates against the smallest and most excluded.
Juan had a personality that radiated humility, peace and tranquility. Listening to him was like being at the feet of Jesus, the master of teachers. Thank you, Juan, for your life and ministry. You have transcended human life to find yourself face to face in the house of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, and thus, your spirit may enjoy eternal life.
